About The Programme

The Master of Social Work (MSW) programme is designed to prepare candidates to meet the demand for social workers with professional training to work as social development professionals. The program places special focus on field-based learning and reflection, which are distinctive characteristics and an essential component of social work education and training, as well as the importance of core competencies in the profession of social work. The program’s goals and learning outcomes will provide the students a holistic view of social work practice as well as a greater understanding of certain functional specialties. The ability of the learners to combine the knowledge, values, and abilities necessary and appropriate for professional practice in social work can be developed through field-based experience. The Master of Social Work (MSW) Program’s curriculum is structured to satisfy the needs of the program’s goals, which include preparing students for careers in the field of social work profession and development. Students who pursue professional social work education are prepared to confidently engage in the disciplines of counselling, group work, community service, research, policy creation and analysis, advocacy, and social and political interventions.

Programs

  • To aid students in building the theoretical underpinnings of social work practise by supplying information on the philosophy, values, methodologies, and fields of the human services profession.
  • To educate the students about current socioeconomic and cultural realities through practical learning, competency in assisting skills, and successful intervention techniques.
  • To adopt a professional strategy for solving societal problems and to act as powerful change agents in the social environment.
  • To gain knowledge of one’s professional self and use it with purpose in professional activity by engaging in holistic transformative practices
  • To improve the learners’ conceptualization, assessment, analysis, and interpretation skills as well as planning and intervention abilities.

Career Opportunities

For the graduates, there are a variety of beneficial employment options available, including those in rural and urban community development, hospital social work, psychiatric social work, industrial counselling, family counselling, child welfare, and administration of NGOs, CSR initiatives, human rights, the environment, disaster preparedness, project planning and evaluation, and field research projects.

Eligibility for Admissions Candidates for admission to the MSW programme must have passed any degree examination at Mahatma Gandhi University with at least 45% of the required marks, or any other examination from a recognized university or body that the Academic Council of Mahatma Gandhi University has recognized as being equivalent. Programme Structure The MSW programme is divided into four semesters, and there are three specialisation groups available for elective (specialisation) courses:

  • Community Development (CD)
  • Family and Child Welfare (FCW)
  • Medical and Psychiatric Social Work (MPSW)

The first and second semesters consist of Eleven courses in addition to a field practicum. Each specialised group has three elective courses, two core courses, and a field practicum in the third semester. In addition to the project/dissertation, there are two core courses, two elective courses, and a field practicum in the fourth semester. The topics covered under the programme are:
